It's been three years since Utah coach Kyle Whittingham has had to navigate his team through a losing streak. Not since 2007 have the Utes lost two games in a row and one would be hard pressed to find a stretch where they were outscored 75-10 in any consecutive losses.
In the past two losses to TCU and Notre Dame, the Utes have combined for six turnovers and season-lows in total offense.
It's uncharted water for Whittingham, who came into this season with 17 losses during his five seasons as a head coach, but he knows he needs to keep his team together if it's going to finish the season on a high note.
"We haven't had a lot of losses the last few years, which is a positive and we feel fortunate in that respect," Whittingham said. "What you're paid to do is get your guys to regroup and get back on track. It's challenging in the fact that you hate to lose. Coaches are competitive by nature and everybody wants to win every game, but that's not how it happens. So, a big part of our job is being able to handle adversity, get guys refocused and back in the right mindset."
Utah heads to San Diego State this weekend with second place in the Mountain West and a national ranking on the line. Currently, the Utes are one win ahead of San Diego State in the Mountain West standings, but a San Diego State win would put the teams in a tie with the Aztecs holding the head-to-head tiebreaker. Nationally, the Utes, who climbed to as high as No. 5 in the national polls, are clinging to No. 23.
