If history holds, the Mariners will make a trade for Russell Branyan at some point next season. Seattle didn't re-sign Branyan after he hit 31 home runs for them during the 2009 season and Branyan signed with the Indians as a free agent for a raise of $100,000. Then, on June 26, they dealt two prospects to Cleveland to bring Branyan back to Seattle. The move worked out, Branyan crushed 15 homers in 238 plate appearances, but the Mariners announced Wednesday that they'd be declining their half of a mutual option on his contract for 2011.
Now, $5 million is a pretty penny to pay for a player whose only marketable skill is prodigious power, but the Mariners don't have any other players who bring that skill to the table. Branyan led the team in homers even though he only played 57 games with the team in 2010. Maybe they can get him for cheaper, but they better get someone to do his job.
