The United States national team was in transition in 1999. Bruce Arena was in his first full-year as head coach, and while the previous summer's World Cup debacle weighed heavily on the program, the American women seized the spotlight during their run to that epic final at the Rose Bowl.If there ever was a time for some new blood, it was 1999.
Jason Kreis made his case. The Dallas Burn forward had been on the fringes of the national team program, ignored as a youth while playing in soccer hinterlands like Nebraska and Louisiana. His All-American career at Duke was worth only a 5th round selection by Dallas in Major League Soccer's inaugural draft.
