Which cage wins? Octagon specifics for the UFC-WEC merger

Much is being made on mixed martial arts blogs and forums about the move to a 30-foot cage from the 25-footer for fighters in the World Extreme Cagefighting who are moving to the Ultimate Fighting Championship as part of the merger that UFC president Dana White announced Thursday.

But, as it turns out, they aren't going to abandon the so-called "small cage" entirely. And nor are established UFC veterans.

That's because the UFC has been using the 25-foot cage for all of its Ultimate Fight Night and Ultimate Fighter events, White confirmed on Friday.

Venues that have hosted numerous UFC Fight Night cards, such as the Palms and the Hard Rock in Las Vegas, were smaller than a typical arena and so the UFC used the 25-foot cage as a way of making it fit easier into the available space.

The numbered UFC events will continue to use the larger cage, but the UFN and TUF cards will use the 25-footer. That should make the ex-WEC fighters feel a little more at home.
