Navy Steers Clear of Rough Waters

Filed under:

An undefeated season. The BCS. The rankings. The Heisman.

From the moment Navy demolished Missouri, 35-13, in the Texas Bowl last season, the expectations for a monumental and possibly historic 2010 started to surface.

Every national outlet was doing a story on quarterback Ricky Dobbs, who was not only a Heisman hopeful, but also a 2040 Presidential candidate.

There was speculation that Navy could be the first military academy to go undefeated and play in a BCS bowl.

Navy football was getting as much preseason attention as powerhouses such as Ohio State, Oklahoma and Alabama, and in turn, the Midshipmen wanted to live up to the hype.

"It was pressure that we kind of put on ourselves a little bit," junior fullback Alexander Teich said before Navy faced Duke on Saturday. "I don't know if we weren't ready to handle it. I think we might have gotten caught up in the hype of it and things like that."
