A man with a reported relationship with Newton, the Auburn quarterback who has become a Heisman Trophy front-runner, allegedly sought a six-figure payment from schools in order to sign the junior college standout.
Kenny Rogers, a former player at Mississippi State in the early 1980s and the head of a Chicago-based company that operates football camps, solicited the offers from schools in order for Netwon to sign a national letter of intent, ESPN.com reported on Thursday.
Former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond, who identified the person who asked the payment only as a former teammate of his, told him that Newton had already been offered $200,000 from other schools, according to the website. Rogers then said he could deliver Newton to Mississippi State for $180,000.
"He said it would take some cash to get Cam," Bond told ESPN.com. "I called our athletic director, Greg Byrne, and he took it from there. That was pretty much it."
An NCAA investigator visited Bond and officials at Mississippi State in September. Cecil Newton, Cam's father, denied to ESPN that his son was involved in any kind of impropriety.
