"Over the last week, my wife has been on the Internet a lot. I have two new nicknames -- 'Darkhorse' and 'No. 4,'" said Roenicke of his underdog status in pursuit of the job.
"I want to thank (owner) Mark (Attanasio) and (GM) Doug (Melvin) for giving me this opportunity. I appreciate the hard work and digging up information on me. This is a great opportunity for me. The opportunity really is all about the players. I'm looking forward to getting to know them. It's a challenge. I've worked hard to get here. The focus is going to be on the players. I don't like the focus to be on me.
"I'm excited. I feel we really have a good club. We're going to grind it out and get after it."
The Brewers signed Roenicke to a two-year contract with a club option for 2013, making him the 18th manager in franchise history and the fourth in the last three seasons.
"Ron brings to the Brewers the skill set needed to maintain high standards of professional excellence and success," said general manager Melvin in a statement.
"I am extremely confident that he will develop an organizational culture that fosters teamwork. Ron projects self-confidence, authority and enthusiasm, which will inspire performance.
